The One World Foundation Rhein-Berg grants microloans to women from the highlands of Guatemala (2,000 to 3,500 metres above sea level), a mountainous region where the highly disadvantaged Mayan indigenous population still lives almost entirely among themselves. They use the money to buy gardening tools and plant seeds, such as cardamom and orchids. At the same time, the university in the nearby city of Cobán offers courses on agriculture and business management. The aim of the support is to enable the women to manage their agricultural plots more efficiently and thus achieve a better livelihood. The experience so far has been positive.
